Chau Doc in An Giang province is located in the Mekong Delta, along the banks of Hau Giang river, closed to the border of Vietnam and Cambodia. Chau Doc has a long history associated with the thrilling stories of Ba Chua Mountain Sam (with Ba Chua Xu Festival around April every lunar year), as well as the many cultural special events in the country, Chau Doc becomes special and sacred with traditions and customs of significant Chinese, Cham and Khmer communities. Its cultural diversity – apparent in the mosques, temples, churches and nearby pilgrimage sites – makes it a fascinating place to explore even if you aren’t continuing to Cambodia. Taking a boat trip to the Cham communities across the river is another highlight, while the bustling market and interesting waterfront provide fine backdrops to a few days of relaxing before heading out.
